First Ace on Hole #17 Recorded

November 7, 2005

Mr. Dan Cagle recorded the first ace on the newly renovated hole 17 this weekend at Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech. Dan used a 4-iron on the 219 yard Par-3 and Mr. Dick Walbert was a witness.

First Ace on Hole #7 Recorded

October 4, 2005

On October 4th, Mr. Matt Sheffer recorded the first hole in one on the newly renovated Hole#7 at Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech. Matt used a 7-iron on the 149 yard hole and the witnesses were Keith Brammer and Eric Hunley.

Johnson Records First Ace on newly renovated "RIVER"

RADFORD, Va. -- Mr. Johnny Johnson recorded a Hole-in-One on the 14th hole at Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech this past Saturday. Witnesses to the rare feat were Bill Polly and Pat Elliot. Johnson used an 8-iron for the shot and the distance was 139 yards. The ace was also the first on the newly renovated "RIVER".... CONGRATS JOHNNY!!

"The River" Opens

The long anticipated opening of the newly renovated Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech took place on August 21, 2005. After two years of moving 400,000 cubic yards of earth and constructing 18 new greens, Mr. Pete Dye has created a masterpiece to rival many of his previous creations. Dye has combined the natural beauty of the New River with his reputation of designing world-class golf and the final product will hold your focus the entire round. Featuring five sets of tees, the yardage will stretch from 5,142 for Ladies to 7,665 for Tournament play. Other tees for Championship, Men, and Seniors provide an enjoyable experience for golfers of all levels.

The new layout winds along 2.5 miles of the scenic and historic New River and many holes have been endeared with its presence. Panoramic views are the norm and the passing of an occasional train enhances the beauty of the surroundings.

Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech is a daily fee public facility. Individual and Family Memberships are available and provide a variety of benefits for members. All golfers are invited and encouraged to come experience "The River." Special corporate and group outings are welcome and can be specifically tailored to meet your needs.

Krulich-Green Team to Win 2005 Member/Guest

Radford, VA -- The duo of Mike Krulich and Charlie Green teamed to win the 2005 Pete Dye River Course Member/ Guest this weekend. The pair shot a 9-under par total of 135 for the 36 hole event and won by 1 shot over the formidable pairing of Bobby Swain and Adam Jarrell. This years event format was 9 holes Pinehust, 9 holes Scramble and 18 holes of Best-ball. A total of 6 flights completed the 36 hole competition with Brian Kitts and his partner Keith Rowland winning the putting tournament following Sundays round.

The River Course of Virginia Tech Renovation Update
"A New Design and a New Name"

April 20, 2005

Fairlawn, VA - The major renovation and improvement project at The River Course of Virginia Tech continues despite unseasonably wet weather and associated construction delays. Mr. Dye's penchant for framed landscapes and meticulous attention to detail is already evident as "The River" forms a personality of its own. We are proud to announce that Mr. Dye has graciously put his signature on this new design and the name is now officially Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech.

Despite the delays the progress and transformation are undeniable. Aesthetic and strategic values of each hole have been enhanced, while routing and shaping create the feeling that every hole has its own unique fingerprint. The design balance in terms of continuity, playability, and Mother Nature are sure to create a memorable experience for golfers of all levels.

Following is a list of current construction updates as of April 20, 2005:

  • 18 new L-93 Bentgrass greens - 12 completed; six in grow-in period.
  • All new tees - construction complete - sodding ongoing.
  • Redesign & rerouting complete - landscaping ongoing - have moved over 400,000 cubic yards of earth to date.
  • New Turf Care Center - Projected opening summer '05.
  • 500 trees to be planted - project ongoing - including poplars, oaks, maples, ashes, and sycamores.
  • Seeding of fairways and greens ongoing - tees and rough perimeters to be sodded - remainder of the rough to be seeded. (Sod is used in many areas to protect detailed shaping.)
  • Front nine yardage: Black - 3942, Blue - 3,479, White - 3,085, Gold - 2,631, Red - 2,495

The clubhouse will remain open daily during the renovation. Visit the golf shop and choose from our complete line of clothing and hard goods, all bearing the new Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech logo. The range will also remain open, weather permitting, however these hours may be adjusted based on usage and to allow for routine maintenance.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- World-renowned golf course architect Pete Dye has been named as the sixth recipient of the PGA TOUR's Lifetime Achievement Award.

Hardwick Inaugural Recipient of Labron Harris Sr. Award

Tech coach named first-ever winner of national golf honor

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech Director of Golf Operations and Head Golf Coach Jay Hardwick has been named the winner of the inaugural Labron Harris Sr. Award, presented by E-Z-GO Textron.

The Harris Award, named after the late Labron Harris Sr., former head coach at Oklahoma State University, is presented to the college or high school coach and PGA Professional whose support of the game through teaching, coaching and involvement in the community has helped ensure the continued growth of the game and represent the finest qualities the game has to offer.

Hardwick was named a finalist for the award in December. The other finalists included John Bermel of Northern Iowa (Iowa PGA Section), Purdue's Devon Brouse (Indiana PGA), Rod Myers of Duke (Carolinas PGA), Pat Owen of the Naval Academy (Middle Atlantic PGA), Kent State's Herb Page (Northern Ohio PGA) and Rick Pohle of Williams College (New England PGA).

"Words cannot express how proud I am to receive the inaugural Labron Harris, Sr. Award," Hardwick said. "Coach Harris was a pioneer in college coaching and to receive an award named for him is the ultimate honor. I am pleased that this award, which emphasizes the role of the PGA professional in the coaching profession, recognizes Virginia Tech and our golf program."

A Quarter Century and Life Member of the PGA of America, Hardwick serves as director of golf operations for the Virginia Tech Golf Course and the River Course of Virginia Tech and head golf coach. He has served as vice-president of the Virginia Chapter of the Middle Atlantic Section, as well as serving on the chapter's membership committee, employment and club relations committe and the tournament rules and regulations committee and the tournament chairman.

A 1994 inductee in the Virginia PGA Hall of Fame, Hardwick has claimed seven conference championships and been named conference Coach of the Year seven times. He was named NCAA District 3-North Coach of the Year in 1994. He was the first coach of the gold medal-winning Team USA in the World Junior Team Championship, played in Japan in 1992.
